Geo Tour : Eco insider guided Geo volcano tour of 3 volcanoes, South Lanzarote

This is the ultimate volcano experience for the Geology fanatic. Offering a combination between the thrilling guided landrover journey across the rugged land, and walking around three spectacular volcanoes. To be this close to the National Park of Timanfaya on foot is legally possible, but it is a protected landscape for good reason. During our volcano tour you will learn exactly why this is.

The first part of the excursion is around the base of Montaña Colorada, one of the last volcanoes to erupt during the activity of 1730 – 1736. The stunning cinder cone shines a beautiful red colour which is particularly intense for a volcano of this type. This easy walk takes the group around the base of the volcano making stops en-route. Your tour guide will explain points of natural or geological interest. During this time we also have the opportunity to see the world’s largest volcanic bomb – a great photo opportunity!

The second stage of the excursion leads us to the edge of the Caldera Blanca crater. This is one of Lanzarote’s most impressive examples of volcanic activity which dates back 1.2 million years. The group will climb steadily to the edge of the crater (slightly lower than the summit which stands at 458m). During a a short rest for a picnic and refreshments your guide will explain the construction of this beautiful caldera and the life which inhabits it.

The final destination is to Volcán del Cuervo (volcano of the raven). Accessed via a short walk from the drop off point, this allows us to travel by foot directly into the heart of a huge crater. Dramatic lava formations can be seen, and the crater is also home to rare nesting birds including Berbery Falcons.

This Geo Tour is broken down into sections, as we drive between the three volcanoes. Total walking distance covers around 7km and is relatively easy. However walking shoes or trainers are recommended as in some places the terrain is uneven.

Geo Tour: Eco insider guided Geo Tour of Mount Corona, North Lanzarote

Geo Tours are designed for us to enjoy the varied terrain of Lanzarote. We offer two geo excursions (North & South Lanzarote). During lanzarote walking tours we explore highlights which are often hard to reach without a 4×4. Our Geo Tours combine guided driving between locations with short walks. There is less physical demand with this type of excursion, making this a popular option for all ages.

La Corona sits at 609m and is the largest volcano on the North of Lanzarote. It is considered a young volcano (20000 years old) and is of strombolian type. Mount Corona is characteristic for it’s impressive crater and abundant lavas which formed one of the longest volcanic tunnels on Earth. As we begin our day with a short walk from Ye village, we encounter dramatic landscapes. This area is covered by vineyards, fig trees and the plentiful presence of wild Fennel, which often fills the air with a delightful aroma.

As we approach the crater we can appreciate a vast range of endemic plants and lichens which give a slightly surreal appearance to the surroundings. From the edge of the crater we can appreciate it’s multi-coloured lava flows and enjoy the beautiful panoramic views.

Heading back to our starting point, we drive to the northern cliffs. At 500m above sea level visitors witness one of the ultimate Canary Island views. Islets Graciosa, Montaña Clara, Alegranza and Roque del Oeste are all perfectly visible from this point. With a bit of luck we are able to watch bird species passing by too, such as the Barbary or Eleonora’s Falcon, Canary Raven and sometimes the Egyptian Vulture.

After our picnic lunch the walk is fairly easy, in reference to physical effort. It is necessary to wear good closed-in walking shoes as trekking on lava stones and volcanic ash can be difficult underfoot. Our half day Geo Tour ends with a short drive to the historical Teguise village. Here we will have the chance to walk along cobbled streets and enjoy the sleepy village atmosphere before heading home.
