Caldera Blanca is a very handsome example of hydromagmatic volcanism. Around 1km in diameter, the light coloured crater is surrounded by the classic black lavas from the infamous Timanfaya eruption. This provides us with a striking visual contrast between young and old volcanic landscapes. All contained within the Geological metropolis of Lanzarote.

cliff hike lanzarote

The perfect Lanzarote crater sits within an older landscape completely surrounded by new lavas. This means protection for the original flora and fauna species within the area. During our volcanic hike we learn of euphorbias, launeas, wild tobacco, ice plants and in the spring months many more endemic flowers. Further to this we will be birdwatching for some special local species!

Perfect crater lanzarote volcano trek – Caldera Blanca

Our perfect crater walk begins with a Landrover ride through a sea of lava to reach the base of the Caldera Blanca volcano. From here we slowly head to the top of the volcano and circle the entire rim of the enormous crater! With 360 panoramic views to the West of Lanzarote, we are now at the peak (458m). Here we take a well earned rest and enjoy the spectacular views over the National Park area – Timanfaya. On clear days we can even get a glimpse of a neighbouring island Fuerteventura. It’s not uncommon to meet a herd of goats at the top of the crater. They may even be gathered inside the bowl, and seem to enjoy watching us as much as we enjoy watching them. During our break (Picnic included for our walking tours), we have the chance to talk more about volcanology. Once we finish circling the crater the easy downhill walk begins. This gives us the chance to simply enjoy the views and look out for surrounding endemic life. The volcano is a so called “kipuka” which means “island” in Hawaian. It is an older landscape which is completely surrounded by new lavas. This protects the original flora and fauna species which live on the land. Among the species here, we find euphorbias, launeas, wild tobacco, and ice plants. In the spring months we also see endemic flowers forming and covering the landscape – Viperine bugloss and chrysanthemum to name but a few. There are many lizards and insects to be found on the way, but the highlight are often the birds. Bird watching is one of the eco Insider passions, and this walk rarely disappoints. Look out for the Canary Raven, Common kestrel, Berthelots Pippits, Barbary Partridge in the lowlands and occasionally above us we see the Egyptian vulture or Houbara bustard. This crater offers a classic Lanzarote trek for us to enthuse over. A walk which plants a sparkle in the eye of the Geology enthusiast!

Lanzarote Botanical cliff hike, Peñas del Chache

On Lanzarote Botanical cliff hike, we climb to the top of lanzarote! Desending through lush countryside into Haria village. Peñas del Chache is the name of the highest peak of Lanzarote (671m above sea level). Located on the iconic Famara cliff, this is one of the oldest places on the island, dating back approximately 11 million years.

Our guided walk embraces much more than simply reaching the highest point on the island. Our climb starts from the wild and beautiful Famara Beach, bordered on the right by the tiny village of Famara which is populated mostly by fisherman and surfers. Climbing to the top of the cliff our group can experience an abundance of vegetation. Species such as Canarian Lavender, Balsamipherous Spurge, purple bells of the endemic Echium Lancerottensis, Scillas, to name but a few.

Approaching the top of this majestic Lanzarote giant, brings an explosion of life, especially during the Spring! It’s often hard to believe that we are standing in Lanzarote, an arid and sometimes baron island in some locations. After a short picnic stop we relax for a while at the top of the cliff to enjoy amazing views of the Atlantic. From here we can observe the remaining islets of the Marine Reserve UNESCO protected areas – La Graciosa, Montaña Clara and Alegranza.

Descending into the fertile Valley of the 1000 Palms, we often enjoy spotting birds and pointing out the local endemic plants. Our journey ends within the beautiful rural lanzarote village of Haria, where our carriage awaits ready to take us home.
