Our cliff hike in Lanzarote took us to the very top of Lanzarote! Peñas del Chache is the name of the highest peak of Lanzarote (671m above sea level). Located on the iconic Famara cliff, this is one of the oldest places on the island, dating back approximately 11 million years.
Hike from Famara
Our climb started from a wild and beautiful Lanzarote beach. Bordered on the right by the tiny village of Famara which is populated mostly by fisherman and surfers. The hike to the cliff top was worth every step. Our group soon experienced an abundance of vegetation, with species such as Canarian Lavender. Balsamipherous Spurge. Purple bells of the endemic Echium Lancerottensis and Scillas to name but a few.
Approaching the top of this majestic Lanzarote giant, we witnessed an explosion of life. The Spring season delivered beauty beyond expectation! It was hard to believe that we were standing in Lanzarote. Most of the island can be arid and dry, but this area proves that Lanzarote really is the land of the micro climate.
After a short picnic stop we relaxed for a while at the top of the cliff to enjoy amazing views of the Atlantic. From here we could observe the remaining islets of the Marine Reserve UNESCO protected areas. La Graciosa, Montaña Clara and Alegranza. It’s important not to give too much away, as there are so many surprises to enjoy. Our guide for the day was Alena and she offered such a deep insight. No question too small or too big, she really was an expert in her field. She lovingly calls Lanzarote ‘her grown up playground’.
A gentle end to the day
Descending into the fertile Valley of the 1000 Palms was like a breath of fresh air. We enjoyed spotting birds and pointing out the local endemic plants. We witnessed a tiny forest nestled in the hills. Our journey ended within the beautiful rural Lanzarote village of Haria. Here we were met by Carmen with the landrover, our trusty carriage ready to take us home.
